Awards Season continues…
Steve Harvey hosts the 44th Annual NAACP Image Awards, broadcasting live tonight on NBC at 8/7c. As is custom, a number of this year’s nominees have been guests on our KCRW shows The Treatment and The Business. Skim the list below and brush up on your nominees before tuning in.
Benh Zeitlin was nominated for Outstanding Direction in a Motion Picture for Beasts of the Southern Wild, which was also nominated for Best Motion Picture. On The Treatment, Zeitlin talks about his influences and the aesthetics of Beasts. The Business host Kim Masters asked him about his upbringing and how he made the film on such a shoestring budget.
Another Best Motion Picture nominee is Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The film has been doing well in the box office despite its controversial portrayal of slavery. Director Quentin Tarantino talked to Elvis Mitchell a few weeks ago, about what happens when a very distinct directing style clashes with a film about race.
Flight, starring Denzel Washington, was also nominated for Best Motion Picture. The Business host Kim Masters sat down with director Robert Zemeckis to talk about his long awaited return to live-action filmmaking, among many other things:
And writer John Ridley stopped by KCRW earlier in 2012 to talk about Red Tails, the George Lucas-produced film about the WWII Tuskegee Airmen, as well as the singular experience of being black in Hollywood. Red Tails is nominated for Best Motion Picture and Best Independent Motion Picture tonight, and Ridley has been nominated with his partner Aaron McGruder for Best Writing in a Motion Picture.
Many people were disappointed that Ava DuVernay’s feature Middle of Nowhere was not nominated for a Best Motion Picture Image Award, nor was DuVernay nominated for Best Director, despite her winning the Director’s Award at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. The actors did score some nominations, though, including Emayatzy Corinealdi, who has already won a Gotham Award for her performance, and is up for an Independent Spirit Award later this month. On the television side of things, Don Cheadle has been nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of the suave Marty Kaan in Showtime’s House of Lies. No surprise there. Don and the show creator, Matthew Carnahan on The Treatment:
And comedian W. Kamau Bell’s show, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell,’ was nominated for Best Talk Series but the competition is stiff. Other nominees include Oprah’s Lifeclass, Oprah’s Next Chapter, and The View.
