At fests, let the films find you

Before I signed on to produce The Treatment with Elvis Mitchell last fall, the closest experience I’d had to a film festival was an all-night Christian Bale marathon at the Aero.  Armed with snacks and a neck pillow, I sat through five Bale features in a row from 7PM to 5AM. It was awesome.

Oscar’s Foreign Films 2012

Foreign Film is one of the Academy’s most dependable categories.  You can argue about the winner (though this year I think they got it right), you can argue about the selections, you can even argue about the process and the criteria.  But inevitably, the nominees are always very much worth seeing, and this year is no exception!

Canada, “Monsieur Lazhar”
A lovely little film about a very big subject.  A class of young students …

The Artist, Hugo…Zeroville

Two Oscar contenders for best picture this year (and the ultimate winner) have been called love letters to the movies…with a little cinematic history lesson thrown in for good measure.  But I recently read “Zervoille”  (thank you Michael Silverblatt!), a book that was much more than just a love letter, more than a history lesson…it, well, digs deep into the unconscious of the movies, movie-making and the film business… let’s call it a psychedelic trip into …

Sundance Day 6: Evolution & Hunger

Alas, I was unable to go to Sundance because of KCRW’s Membership Drive which began last week (SUPPORT KCRW HERE).   Luckily, The Treatment producer Jenny Radelet was able to sneak off for a few days…here’s the final day of her report!

DAY SIX
Sleep finally wins and I miss the early morning screenings.  It pains me to miss Julie Delpy’s “2 Days in New York,” “Bachelorette,” and Mike Birbiglia’s “Sleepwalk With Me.”  Since I had to leave …

Two hours of sleep.  Feeling totally refreshed and ready to take on the day.  That is a LIE.  But I can’t miss Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer,” so I’m up and out in time for the 8:30AM …
