Is fat shaming worse in L.A. than in other cities? Plus, we discuss the new documentary Fed Up with its creators and Jonathan Gold previews his 101 Best Restaurants.

Highlights from this week’s show: 

1. Is L.A. Full of Fat Shamers? Can you Fat Shame a Man?–Writer, actor and comedian Jen Curran moved to Los Angeles last year and was surprised to find a city full of bullies. She wrote a piece for the site XO Jane called I moved to Los Angeles and was Publicly Shamed for Being Overweight.

Kat Stoeffel is an associate editor at The Cut, New York Magazine’s fashion site. She wrote an article about the sheer impossibility of fat shaming men. Plus, we talk about the latest episode of Louie where actress Sarah Baker confronts Louie about his prejudice against dating overweight women.

2. Health at Every Size–Dr. Linda Bacon is a Professor of Nutrition and the author of the new book Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight. She aims to debunk the cultural assumption that weight is the root cause of health problems.

3. Fed Up, the Movie–Fed Up is a new documentary that asks why America’s rate of obesity and disease have skyrocketed in recent decades, despite established health guidelines and a proliferation of low fat products and gym memberships. 4. Big Sugar’s Public Enemy Number One–Dr. Robert Lustig is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at UCSF. His youtube lecture, Sugar: The Bitter Truth, has been viewed over four million times. He is also the author of Fat Chance and is one of the prominent voices in the new documentary Fed Up.

5. Jonathan Gold’s 101–Jonathan Gold is the Pulitzer Prize winning food writer for the L.A. Times. His highly anticipated 101 Best Restaurant List will be tucked inside every Sunday edition of Sunday’s L.A Times. He previews the top 20 on Good Food.
