Foodchella 2014 Features a Lineup of L.A. Chefs and Upscale Dining

The Coachella lineup that  festivalgoers eagerly anticipate each year is not usually the list of food vendors who make it out to Indio’s polo field. But this year the festival has revved up their food offerings by recruiting prominent L.A. chefs and by bringing in Outstanding in the Field.

Jeff Miller of Thrillist who has been to Coachella almost every year of the festival’s existence says that this change is largely attributable to a “huge intersection between food and music that’s happening and has been happening for many years.” Other festivals such as Outside Lands, Jazz Fest and Austin City Limits have been cultivating local chefs and cuisine for years now.

And although the focus of the food options at Coachella is on relatively affordable street fare, those looking for a high-end culinary experience at the festival can pay $225 for Outstanding in the Field, a high end dinner pop-up series that usually takes place on farms. But at Coachella it will take place on the festival grounds and offer an interesting juxtaposition. Imagine “a lovely sit down dinner with Skrillex playing in the background,” Jeff laughed.

He attributes this new element of Coachella’s food offerings to the festival’s unique celebrity allure.

“There’s been a move towards a high-end luxury experience being certain people’s Coachella experience,” he said.
