While on a family trip to San Diego, Pulitzer Prize winning food writer Jonathan Gold was mesmerized by the lamb barbacoa in nearby Chula Vista. The restaurant Aqui es Texcoco is known for their platters of lamb barbacoa which can be ordered by the pound. Be sure to order beans, guacamole, chiles torreados and a stack of tortillas to go with the lamb. If you aren’t willing to drive to Chula Vista for barbacoa, Gold recommends My Taco in Highland Park, Borrego de Oro in East LA and El Borrego as de Oro on Slauson off of the Harbor Freeway.

All of Jonathan Gold’s restaurant suggestions are on the Good Food Restaurant Map.

Thanks for Jonathan Gold's restaurant recommendation in San Diego. We want more.
After moving to San Diego from Huntington Beach, I still listen to the Good Food podcast every week.
It would be great if Good Food would be carried in San Diego on KPBS, perhaps the stories and food personalities that are not geographicaly important for the material presented. (Like the Santa Monica Farmers Market news.)
Much of the program could be listened to in mid America too. It is an idea to consider.
    Thank you.

    Hi Tom,
Glad you're happy to still listen and even happier we had a recommendation in your part of the woods.

Speaking of barbacoa – I happened to be in Brownsville, Texas this weekend and went to the legendary Vera's Backyard Bar-B-Que that I learned of from the Good Food episode with Daniel Vaughn. Their beef barbacoa was outstanding. Thanks!
