Ask Evan: Where Should I Stop to Eat on 1-5 Between Los Angeles and Monterey?

Every Tuesday I answer a question from a Good Food listener. You can email me a question, leave one on Facebook or add one in the comments section here. This week’s came from Lance:

I am looking for suggestions for a lunch break along the I-5 someplace between So Cal and Monterey where 5 restless passengers can relax and take a break from the road. Do you have a restaurant suggestion?
I asked my pal Jonathan Gold to weigh in on this question. He said, “There’s a pretty good Basque restaurant in Los Banos, but that takes you too far north. But it’s actually faster to cut over to the 101 on the 46, at which point you can eat in Paso Robles – Artisan is awfully good. So is Thomas Hill Organics and Panolivo.” As for Monterey itself, Jonathan suggested the seafood restaurant at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Evan, Thomas Hill Organics in Paso is a don't-miss destination, and they have their own farm, too. It's like Super Rica in SB, you time your travel to hit it! Enjoy! http://www.thomashillorganics.com/market_bistro.h…

If you want to stay on I-5 to 152 then there's really only one place to eat right on the highway and that's Harris Ranch. But if you are going to take 46 over to 101 then Paso is your place. If eating is the point of the trip then drop south to Templeton and McPhee's.

My husband and I loved the pupusas at the truck located at the Buttonwillow exit on I 5. A much better experience than our lunch at Harris Ranch..
