Last week I traveled east to see my family in Branford, Connecticut.  Any trip to the area demands a trip to two places: Lenny’s Indian Head Inn (a lobster and steamers joint) and The Lobster Shack.  The latter is new to the Ells family dining repertoire.  We discovered it last summer and it became an instant favorite.  We can get our lobster fix without having to wait in the endless lines at Lenny’s.  I’m not a big fan of mayonnaise in my lobster rolls.  The lobster rolls at the Lobster Shack are simple – fresh lobster meat on a toasted buttered, hot dog roll.  Add a little salt and it’s heaven.  I recommend dental floss immediately following.

I have yet to find a good lobster roll in L.A.  Any ideas?

The only halfway decent one I've had is at Blue Plate Oysterette in Santa Monica, but I do like a little mayo (as theirs has). I sense another food truck on the horizon….

That's a great idea.. I love the idea of a lobster roll truck!

Not exactly in your neighborhood, but I have a favorite: Red's Eats, on Route 1 in Wiscassett (Maine), serves a fantastic lobster roll with drawn butter, not mayo — about an entire lobster's meat on a toasted hot dog roll — served in foil like yours. There's nothing to be done but wipe the butter and grin off your face.

Except, possibly, going back for an order — or two — of deep-fried big belly clams.

I say this cautiously, as I know this is hotly debated but Sweetsalt in Toluca Lake has a decent lobstah roll special occasionally. Butterty grilled bread, dill aoili and chopped celery if I recall correctly. I'm a former New Englander if that matters.

Linda, ran across a blog/site from Tony Green called Mere Cat and this is his read on Lobster Rolls along the coast of New England. http://merecat.org/food/dining/lobster-rolls/ He even went to the drive-in seafood place near where I grew up in Ct. to try one of their rolls and report back. Has a lot of beer info for Philly if that interests you also. Love MA and went to school in Boston. Ken

I have only had them in LA, so I am not sure how authentic is is, but The Hungry Cat in Hollywood makes a great one, IMHO.

I just moved to LA from Connecticut. Thanks for this post. Next time take a trip to Abbot's in Noanck and try the hot lobster rolls. Quite interesting! I've had a lobster roll from a truck and it was not successful. I've had one from them and somehow it doesn't work.

In LA, i'm thinking home made is the only way to go. I buy cooked lobster, though. Hurling the poor things into boiling water is too gnarly a task!

Has anyone found the "top-load" hot dog buns here in L.A.? I've never seen them out here. I really miss them, even just for the good ole 'Red Hots' I used to have in W.N.Y. Thanks.

I grew up going to Jimmie's in West Haven, CT and now live in Pensacola, FL. Our local fishmonger gets fresh lobsters flown in daily from Maine. Yum!! a taste of home at last!!!

@hells today I ate from the Lobsta truck (lobstatruck.com). You can get it made with mayo or butter (I'm a butter fan), on a buttered and grilled proper New England style roll, and the lobster was cut into chunks, very fresh and sweet. $12. They also have a crab roll (again, butter or mayo) that is a ton of lump crab in the roll for $11. I think I'll be driving around LA a lot to get my cheap yet awesome lobster roll fix!

The lobster roll at Coast at Shutters in Santa Monica is the best in town by far!!

A friend of mine went to Ocean Seafood in Santa Monica with a jones forlobster rolls – nothing listed but we asked the waiter if perhaps they had them "off menu." He said he'd ask and came back with the chef who said "I'm from Maine!" and insisted that he'd whip us up some hella good ones. And he did…I'm pretty sure he had to send someone out for the rolls, too! Yum.

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% sure. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Kudos

Could it merely also be that her repeated statements that she just is not interested (bared out by your statement that she’s much more policy than politics,) will be the determining aspect?
