Hwy 395 – A Moveable Feast

21 July 2010 979 views One Comment

Last week I drove from Nevada to Los Angeles down Highway 395.  Typically, I had mapped out the restaurants and food vendors along the famous highway, but forgotten actual “directions,” a common mistake when I’m in the driver’s seat.  Fortunately the directions were a breeze and we were well fed to boot.  Below were some of the highlights.

Housemade beef jerky, habanero pistachios, honey and jams...in the middle of the Mojave.

The Whoa Nellie Deli at the Mobile Gas Mart overlooking Mono Lake - one of the best views you'll ever have at a restaurant. With menu items like wild buffalo meatloaf and lobster taquitos, this isn't your average gas station cuisine.

Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ in Bishop, CA. Don't arrive with an empty stomach - the bakery is like Disneyland for food lovers. Fresh breads such as chile cheese, blueberry walnut and their famous Sheepherder's Bread are stacked 8 feet high.

I love the Whoa Nellie Deli – I also had the lobster taquitos last time we were there! Such a find in the middle of nowhere….
