The Magical Elves (the production company behind Project Runway, Top Chef) are holding an open casting call in LA for an NBC show called America’s Next Great Restaurant.  Contestants will compete to win the opportunity to open a new restaurant chain in three cities across America.  The contestants’ fates will be decided by a panel of real investors who fund the chain of restaurants with their own money.

Chocolate Bunny

It’s just so sad when you can’t enjoy a chocolate bunny on Easter because of a food allergy.  You don’t have to worry about indulging in the pleasure of nibbling on those bunny ears (or do you start at the feet?).  Introducing Divvies – an allergy-free candy company.  They sell chocolate bars, jelly beans and chocolate bunnies!  I’ve never tried these.  If you have, let me know how they taste.

Miner

A listener emailed us the other day about Miner’s lettuce.  She sees it on the side of the trail while hiking in Temescal Canyon.  According to Laura Avery, market manager at the Santa Monica Farmers Market, David West the wild mushroom guy and James Birch both bring miners lettuce to the farmers market from time to time.  And Yasutomi grows it hydroponically.  ”It’s kine of like thick spinach.  It does grow wild – usually in Spring,” she writes.  Yasutomi has it now at the Wed and Saturday downtown markets.

Vadouvan Curry, Chicken Thigh and more

At the Spice Station in Silverlake I bought Vadouvan, an Indian spice blend that I had never heard of.  It was fabulous.  Turns out it’s a mixture of onions, shallots, garlic, cardamom, dried curry leaves and more.  I made a curry with chicken, baby artichoke, rainbow carrots, mushrooms, turnips, and onion:
