5 Must Have iPhone Apps

By KCRW Music Host & DJ Mario Cotto
With literally dozens* of apps to choose from in the iTunes App Store, it can be real easy to just load up your iPhone or iPod with pages and pages of free apps. But, there is nothing quite like spending those 99 cents** and seeing your investment rewarded with an app that can spectacularly dazzle the senses of everyone around you, help develop your motor skills and our mental acuity, potentially make someone laugh, or make someone throw a beer in your face…THAT’S what you are investing in.

5 Favorite Guest DJ Sessions

by Music Publicity Director and Producer of the Guest DJ Project Rachel Reynolds
I believe the best way to get to know someone is to look at their fridge or inspect their music collection. I created the Guest DJ Project because I am truly interested in the music tastes of people who create culture – whether its movies, clothes or a delicious plate of food. It’s been an incredible experience hearing these people tell deeply personal stories – in fact, I think some of them are surprised by how much they reveal by simply talking about 5 songs that have moved them throughout their lives. There have been tears and lots of laughs. I have been introduced to a tremendous amount of music I did not know before and songs I already knew now have another meaning.
5 Favorite Music Scenes in a Movie

Gary Calamar, KCRW DJ
I love the music and I love the movies so, I REALLY LOVE the music and the movies together. Here are a few my personal faves.
1. The Lovin’ Spoonful – ”Do You Believe In Magic” from In America
In the film, directed by Jim Sheridan, the Sullivan family has been having a rough time and are hoping that they will find some good luck in New York City. This song plays as they emerge from the Lincoln Tunnel and into Manhattan. The look on their young daughter’s face as she looks through the car window is absolutely breathtaking. You will believe in magic in a young girl’s heart. (more…)
5 great live recordings you’ll never tire of

It’s a case of Sophie’s Choice for me selecting these five amazing live performances, but I want to share these live recordings for their power, their virtuosity, and all the human emotions from both artist and the lucky people who were there at these historic recordings. They all are treasures that allow us to partake, even though we weren’t there. And these are gems that I will never tire of. There are many, many others I can’t include in this short list, but these five are all outstanding.
5 Ways to Feel Normal When You Start Work at Midnight

By NPR Morning Edition host, Renee Montagne
Renee Montagne lives and works in Los Angeles even though most of her Morning Edition colleagues work in Washington DC. The show starts early anyway, but when it’s on East Coast time, it’s so early in the morning that it’s late night. Here’s how she tries to live a normal life even though she starts work at midnight.
I live in a 1920’s courtyard here in Santa Monica, with five cottages encircling a communal garden. Over the years, our cottages have been home to actors, directors, screenwriters, and cinematographers, who know well what it means to work long hours, overnight.
