For as long as I can remember, music has been a paramount force in my life… it has been said that I learned how to use my parents turntable before I could tie my shoes.  This reflection of my own life in music has taken on a new meaning this year, as my wife Maggie and I are expecting our first child in the coming months.  We want to be sure to instill the importance of music with this child.

When I was fourteen, I started surfing, borrowing my older brother’s longboard.  I persisted and eventually became pretty good.  I surfed all up and down the coast and rode the big waves in Hawaii too.  And of course I loved going to surfing movies and watching impossibly beautiful waves and classic surfers carving them like Baryshnikov.  It was always disappointing going out the next day after the movie and find the surf flat.

Kwase Mfume, when he was still head of the NAACP, told me a story that moved me greatly. His grandmother raised him. It was just the two of them and they were extremely tight. When he was only ten, his grandmother died quickly from an aggressive cancer. On one of her last days, Kwase was sitting on the edge of her hospital bed. He cried and told her he couldn’t live without her. She said, “Of course you’re going to live. You’re just a little boy. And you’re going to have a wonderful life.
