Palm Springs Modernism Week, the annual celebration of mid-century modernism and the desert lifestyle, has just kicked off. KCRW’s Jason Groman sent us this atmospheric image, above, and reports the fun is getting underway. There are heaps of free and ticketed events this weekend, including a conversation between DnA’s very own Mallery Roberts Morgan and Roman Alonso of the Commune design collective. Commune of course designed Ace Hotel Palm Springs, where many visitors will stay for PSM, and the new Ace Hotel on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles.

Read Mallery’s story for 1st Dibs about the design and decorative arts you will find in Palms Springs during Modernism Week.

Stephen Collins

This Sunday, deLab (Design East of La Brea) will host a Man About Modernism Cocktail Party with Stephen Collins at his South Palm Springs residence.” The poolside cocktail party will include a tour of his house and visitors will be able to see collection of art, artifacts, furniture, and other examples of 20th century design objets belonging to this “self-described semi-nomadic bon vivant,” who has “traversed the globe from Marrakesh to London, Paris to Palm Beach, collecting beautiful things for the past 20 years.”

Phoenix

Charles Phoenix will also be in town to lead a “fun-fueled whirlwind adventure extravaganza” in order to seek out the most unique and underrated “mid-century architectural gems and jewels, past and present.” This Saturday, join the pop culture humorist at the Palm Springs Art Museum for the event, Charles Phoenix: Architecture in Los Angeles.

Don’t want to break the bank? Modernism Week will also host these free events.
