You might think the era of building new freeways in Southern California is over. But an eight-lane stretch of asphalt has been proposed to connect the rural desert cities of Palmdale and Lancaster, in far northern LA County, with those of Victorville and Apple Valley, in the San Bernardino County.
Orthodox Jewish communities are not allowed to carry belongings on Shabbat, unless it’s within their own home. They’ve found a way around this law by creating a “wall,” often a barely perceptible thread, around their neighborhood, known as an eruv. In West LA, a team of rabbis patrols the borders of the eruv every week to inspect and repair it.
