1. Recesses

The “USC Seven,” aka the seven out of eight MFA students at USC’s Roski School of Fine Arts who dropped out of the program have opened an exhibit at Park View Gallery, through August 8.

When: Open until August 8, 2015

2. Music & Design

In a musical era no longer defined by the album cover, how do artists define themselves visually? Jeri Heiden of Smog Design and Creative Directors from Hollywood Records, Capital Records, and Interscope will talk about their experiences working on photography and design for musical artists including Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Wilco, will.i.am, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

3.  KCRW Summer Nights: JD McPherson with Sarah Gayle Meech 

Head to the Santa Monica Pier, which has been decked out for KCRW’s Summer Nights and features art installations and a newly redesigned stage. This Thursday, you can see singer-songwriter JD McPherson with Sarah Gayle Meech by sand and sea.

When: Thursday July 30 7:00 PM

Where: Century Park 2000 Avenue of the Stars Los Angeles

4. AKTION! Art and Revolution in Germany 1918-1919 

Following the 1st World War, Germany went through an intense power struggle to determine the shape of the new republic, punctuated by two failed workers’ uprisings and the state-ordered assassination of communist leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. A new art exhibit at LACMA examines the competing graphics that were created during that period.

When: Open until January 10, 2016

Where: LACMA; 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles

5. Gamble House “Upstairs Downstairs” Tours

The Gamble House does Downton Abbey. From now until August 16 the 1908 Arts and Crafts masterpiece, designed by Greene & Greene, will open its servants’ quarters for exclusive “Upstairs Downstairs” tours. Visitors will be able to “compare the living quarters of the served with those ‘in service.'”

When: July 30-August 16, 2015
