1. Architecture and Design Film Festival

30 films about the love, hope and strife that goes into designing and building will be featured in the Architecture and Design Film Festival (ADFF), running March 12-16 at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in downtown Los Angeles. The ADFFLA, the first in Los Angeles, also includes panels and exhibits, on such topics as designing the city (moderated by Christopher Hawthorne), chairs designed by architects (moderated by Frances Anderton) and preservation (with guest Kelly Lynch.) 2.  Talks: Cirque Du Soleil IDEAS and The Business of Motion Design

Cirque Du Soleil IDEAS

Two of the creators behind the stunning Cirque Du Soleil will speak Tuesday night as part of the IDEAS lecture series hosted by UCLA’s Architecture and Urban Design School continues this Tuesday. Welby Altidor, director of Creation, and Boris Verkhovsky, Director of Performance, Design and Development will share the thinking that goes into the acrobatics and the imagery of Cirque du Soleil.

When: Tuesday March 11 at 6:45 PM

The Business of Motion Design

For anyone interested in the business of motion design, the AIGA LA Chapter is hosting an evening with Chris Do, Emmy award winning founder of the digital design studio Blind. This is the second installment of AIGA/LA’s Hecho En Los Angeles, and Do will delve into how design agencies “strategize, pitch and win sustainable business while maintaining an atmosphere that cultivates creativity.” Hopefully he will address some of the concerns of the VFX community as special effects work leaves town (discussed on KCRW’s The Business).

When: Thursday March 13, 2014 6:30-9:30 PM

3. Florencia Pita/PFmod: UMMA Table & Objects

SCI-Arc is hosting the first exhibition dedicated to the work of Florencia Pita, an Argentina-born, Los Angeles-based architect and designer whose work is fearless in its use of color and form. The exhibit will showcase the body of her work through installation pieces, urban design, tableware, furniture and architecture.

When: Friday  March 14 at 7:00 PM

Where: SCI-Arc Library

Leonard Knight Salvation Mountain

4. Salvation Mountain -Leonard’s Celebration of Life

Leonard Knight, creator of Slab City’s folk art masterpiece Salvation Mountain passed away last month. According to Salvation Mountain’s Facebook page Knight will be memorialized this Saturday, with a procession and a potluck to celebrate his life, and quirky contribution to the desertscape.

When: Saturday March 15 at 12:00 PM

LA FASHION WEEK

5. Los Angeles Fashion Week

Paris and New York Fashion Weeks have wrapped up, having as usual been in the global spotlight. Now Los Angeles Fashion Week has started and, as usual, it is a mysteriously low-key event mostly out of the eye of the public. But are still a handful of events for those interested in seeing the work of local designers, including a Rock That Fashion Spring Issue release party, SewDown— a fashion show and sale, and Project Ethos.

When: March 10-20
