1. WestEdge
WestEdge Design Fair was a smash with trade and public on its first outing last year, attracting 6000 attendees. Now the four-day event returns to the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica with over 100 exhibitors specializing in modern furniture, lighting, kitchen, bath, outdoor furnishings and other products for the home. Meet the designers and hear them discuss current trends and challenges, on panels ranging from Rock Star Architecture: Creative Design for Recording Artists, featuring private recording studio architect Peter Gruneisen, to Why We Hate Work: Is How We Work Working?, moderated by Interior Design magazine editor Edie Cohen. DnA’s Frances Anderton will be there Friday afternoon, moderating a panel co-sponsored by DIEM, on Rethinking Retail: Does Main Street Matter? She will talk to Westedge co-founder Troy Hanson and guests about the pros and cons of retailing via fairs, web and bricks-and-mortar stores. Plus, there’s a party on the opening night to benefit Heal The Bay.

2. Found LA
Explore the nooks and crannies of various L.A. neighborhoods on tours given by folks that live in those ‘hoods. In its fourth year, Found LA is a citywide event, created by LA Commons, that “showcases culturally dynamic neighborhoods through the eyes of residents, public figures and renowned artists.” Some options for tours include: “Our Renaissance, Our River, Our Reseda!”, “Pacoima’s ‘Mural Mile'” and “Mar Vista’s ‘Great Street’ Venice Boulevard.”

3. Michael Sorkin: How Green is My City
There’s been a lot of buzz lately surrounding the potential role of cities in solving some of our generation’s most pressing problems. Longtime architecture critic and architect Michael Sorkin will explain in a lecture Monday night how he believes cities can orient themselves for a greener future. While at SCI-Arc, check out Bryan Cantley‘s installation and Michael Maltzan‘s newly opened One Santa Fe housing and retail complex, reviewed here by Christopher Hawthorne.

4. 5th Festival for all Skid Row Artists
Skid Row artists will be able to showcase their artistic talents during the 5th annual Festival presented by the Los Angeles Poverty Department and partners UCEPP and Lamp Fine Arts Project. The goal of the event, says LAPD, is to show “that Skid Row is a neighborhood, a community that’s home to many creative people.” It will take place in Gladys Park, from 1-5pm each day. Musicians, performers, poets and spoken word artists, dancers, visual artists, hair artists, are invited to sign up to schedule a performance or exhibit artwork.
Note: Skid Row is also home to a number of creative homes, created by Los Angeles architects deeply committed to providing decent shelter for the homeless. Most recently opened: the Star Apartments complex of 100 homes in stacked prefab modules by the above-mentioned Michael Maltzan.

5. Unscene
Furniture designer Azadeh Shladovsky turns the camera on her imaginative process as well as the craft of furniture in Unscene, a short film created in collaboration with Sayer Danforth that will be launched Wednesday night at Shladovsky’s studio, and be on show there through November 15. The film “explores Shladovsky’s study in visual perception in the craft of furniture making.”
