Your week in design events from DnA.
1. DIEM
Come to the West Hollywood Design District this Friday for DIEM, a day of talks and parties spread through the showrooms of the designing city. Curated by Mallery Roberts Morgan (above right) with an assist from DnA’s Frances Anderton (left of picture above), chewy topics include “rethinking retail,” social entrepreneurship (very good? Or too good to be true?) and whether a designer needs to be a “brand.”
Guests include AD’s Mayer Rus, Commune’s Roman Alonso and Frozen art director Michael Giaimo. Giaimo will talk about his experiences with the movie that keeps on giving, as well as his application of narrative design to his personal space, a restored house by Edward H. Fickett. The day is free and open to the public but space is limited so sign up here.
When: Friday November 14, 2014

3. Under the Umbrella: Lutah Maria Riggs and Her Santa Barbara Style
Santa Barbara owes its architectural distinction in part to the architect Lutah Maria Riggs, designer of homes, commercial and institutional buildings and even movie sets in a singular, productive life. Riggs was a protégée and later chief designer of Spanish Revival architect George Washington Smith before founding her own firm and later forming a partnership with Arvin Shaw. Her meticulous hand is in Santa Barbara buildings including the Lobero Theatre, the Vedanta Temple and the Blaksley Library at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, as well as residences in Palos Verdes’ Rolling Hills.
Riggs reportedly did not like being referred to as a “woman” architect, but on obtaining her license in 1928, she became the first female licensed architect in Santa Barbara and joined Julia Morgan as a role model to later “women architects.” Explore her life, work and arresting personal style (see photo above) at this exhibition, designed by JCRR Design.
When: Open through Spring 2015
Where: Santa Barbara Historical Museum; 136 E De La Guerra St, Santa Barbara
Tickets: Free and open to the public.
