1. The Mediated City, at Woodbury University

What is the relationship between architecture, cities, technology and media today? That’s the question posed by Woodbury University’s ‘Mediated City’ conference taking place this week; it takes its cue from Marshall McLuhan who, fifty years ago, “coined the term the ‘global village’ and envisaged a future in which “technologies and medias would radically alter the way we interact in our physical environments.” Hear from speakers giving fast-paced presentations, including DnA’s own Frances Anderton, landscape architect Mia Lehrer and environmental health sciences professor Dr. Richard Jackson.

When: Wednesday October 1-Saturday October 4, 2014

Molecule: Designing the Unseen

Chinatown’s Fifth Floor Gallery is about to open an exhibition with a difference: in collaboration with the Institute for Art and Olfaction (I.A.O.) it has created a scent, described as nothing less than “an olfactory palliative for the urban Angeleno, the scent itself counterbalances dry concrete, hot shimmering metal and the dog days of a never-ending summer with bright herbaceous citrus, tropical fruits, lush florals, and dry, musky woods. . .” The scent will be available at the gallery, along with a display of limited edition prints by I.A.O. creative director Micah Kahn, that represent an “intricate graphic representation of a selection of the molecules that make up the new scent.”
