2. David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring

David Hockney helped define the Los Angeles lifestyle with his iconic paintings and photo collages of sunkissed swimming pools. He eventually moved back to his native Yorkshire and now draws inspiration from England’s countryside. Not that he has given up on experimenting with painting techniques. His new exhibition at L.A. Louver of works capturing the “shifts in landscape that occurs between the bleakness of winter and the fecundity of spring” are drawn on the iPad.

When: On view until August 29, 2014

Where: L.A. Louver; 45 N Venice Blvd, Venice

Tickets: Free and open to the public.

3. Scott Johnson Book Talk

With L.A.’s Wilshire Grand under construction and city skylines globally being altered by a worldwide tall building spree, now is a good time to hear from L.A. skyscraper architect Scott Johnson, who has just published Performative Skyscraper: Tall Building Design Now. He’ll be at Design Within Reach in Pasadena for a Q & A and book signing, where he’ll explain how technology allows skyscrapers to “respond intelligently to climate, optimize the use of structural materials and more sensitively reflect their cultural sources.” .

When: Thursday, August 21, 2014, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Where: Design Within Reach; Pasadena Studio 60 W. Green St. Pasadena

Dion Neutra has preserved the building and this Thursday will open up an exhibit space there, with a gala featuring photography by Joselle Celine, above, a display of newly licensed Neutra Furniture, presentations by Celine and Dion Neutra, as well as other “Neutra-related memorabilia.”
