1. Late Modern Reflecting Glass Architecture
Ever wondered how the Pacific Design Center (PDC; architect, Cesar Pelli), above, fits into Southern California and US architecture history? Architectural historian Daniel Paul will talk at LACMA Thursday about the emergence of buildings with smooth, all-over reflecting glass skins, by Cesar Pelli, the late Anthony Lumsden and others in the mid-1960s and 70s. Paul will explain how this high-tech, corporate vernacular connected to LA’s Light and Space movement and the region’s aerospace and technology industries.

2. Central Ave. Jazz Festival
This annual, free community festival, celebrating the cultural history of Los Angeles’ Central Avenue, kicks off Saturday in front of the historic Dunbar Hotel, between 42nd and 43rd streets, recently reborn, after many years in decline, as Dunbar Village, an 83 unit senior and family community designed by multifamily housing architect Thomas Safran. In addition to music — acts including Kamasi Washington & Next Step, Patrice Rushen, Ndugu Chancler, Mongorama and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra — and eats, there will also be an Arts Pavilion showcasing local graffiti and muralist artists in action.

3. Big Bear Cycling Festival
If you can’t make it to the Tour de France, wrapping up this weekend, how about testing your capacity for endurance cycling at 7,000 feet by taking part in the Big Bear Cycling Festival, a week of rides that culminate August 2 with the Tour de Big Bear. You can take the family!

4. Instagram Mini-Marathon
Art curator, critic and historian Hans-Ulrich Obrist takes time out from co-directing Exhibitions and Programmes at London’s Serpentine Gallery to helm, with ForYourArt, an Instagram Mini-Marathon at the Million Dollar Theatre. Describing Instagram as “an online platform that collapses a vast variety of creative impulses into one specifically undefined, unbounded space”, he invites guests to “present photos from any Instagram feed, or their own, to illustrate approaches to using the app, and to discuss how it functions within their individual practices.”

5. Renegade Craft Fair
Get your artisanal fix at The Renegade Craft Fair taking place in and around downtown’s Grand Park this weekend. The free event has lined up more than 250 makers, DJs spinning tunes, and purveyors of food and drink. Or learn how to make stuff yourself; workshops will be held throughout the weekend.
