This seminal 1970 photograph by Julian Wasser of Joan Didion leaning against her white Corvette (for her book, Play It As It Lays) is among images in a show at Craig Krull Gallery, that explores how car culture shaped the built environment of L.A. from “billboards, dingbats, car washes, drive-ins, freeways and maps-to-the-stars’-homes.”

4. Local Not Local

Local Not Local is an exhibition of Arabic and Iranian typography, curated by Pouya Jahanshahi and Maece Seirafi, that is currently on display at Levantine Cultural Center in Los Angeles. “Bypassing traditional sociopolitical boundaries,” ten LA-based Iranian and Arab artists and designers have gathered under one roof. The goal, says one of the artists, Sam Anvari, is to introduce “our culture and the beauty of our typography to Americans.” Iranians and Arabs speak different languages (Persian, or Farsi, is Indo-European while Arabic has Semitic roots) but they share the same alphabet (although the Iranian alphabet has four extra characters) and a tradition of exquisite calligraphy. Anvari adds, “graphic designers are always the artists behind the scenes. This time we wanted to get under the spot light ourselves.”
When: Runs until August 29, 2014

Where: Levantine Cultural Center; 5998 Pico Blvd., Los Angeles

Tickets: Free and open to the public.

5. See Life

When: on view until July 26, 2014

Where: Hinge Parallel Gallery; 8545 Washington Blvd., Culver City

Tickets: Free and open to the public.
