1. Palm Springs Modernism Week
This annual celebration of midcentury Modern buildings and lifestyle has been such a hit that it now runs to eleven days, starting Thursday with a tour of Sunnylands and continuing through two weekends, with parties, showcases, bus tours, “Modern Mambo” dance parties and talks. KCRW will be there in full — this Sunday DnA’s Mallery Roberts Morgan will talk with Commune, the designers of Ace Hotel in downtown LA and Palm Springs; and the following Sunday DnA’s Frances Anderton and Press Play host Madeleine Brand will discuss living in midcentury multifamily buildings.

2. Skyline
Downtown L.A. will host host Skyline, a free ten-day architecture and art event starting this Thursday. The event will showcase “site specific, experimental, interactive installations that embrace Los Angeles’ ever evolving cultural landscape.”

3. Art of Motion Picture Costume Design FIDM
FIDM’s annual popular display of the actual costumes designed for some of the year’s favorite, and often Oscar-nominated movies, comes once again.

4. In Focus: Architecture
The Getty explores the relationship between photography and architecture in the exhibit In Focus: Architecture that runs until March 2. ” Spanning the history of the medium, the exhibition features twenty-four works by such diverse practitioners as William Henry Fox Talbot, Eugène Atget, Walker Evans, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and Ryuji Miyamoto.”

5. Art Center and UCLA speakers
Jonathan Harris Art Center Dialogues
Explore the relationship between humans and technology with Jonathan Harris at Art Center on Tuesday. Jonathan Harris is a computer scientist and artist who has lectured about his work at TED, MoMA, Google, The New York Times and many other venues.
Harris will discuss various topics, including: storytelling, big data, data visualization, online communities, and how technology is affecting our lives.

The Cloud City
Andrew Blum wrote a fascinating book Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet, about the vast, real infrastructure of buildings and wires (tubes) that support our “virtual” world. This week he will speak in Prof. Miriam Posner’s class ”Digital Labor, Urban Space, and Materiality.”
