Downtown Goes Austere

Its founder, Fredrik Carlström, calls it a “magazine.” Whatever it is, Austere is the large, loft-like ground and mezzanine floors of a former commercial building at 9th and Hill  recast as a showcase for past and present Scandinavian design objects. Main attraction for adults and children alike: a see-through swing with lights.

Imaginary 20th Century

4. Imaginary 20th Century

According to legend, in 1901, a woman named Carrie selects four men to seduce her, each with a version of the coming century. Inevitably, the future always spills off course. We navigate through the suitors’ worlds, follow Carrie on her travels, and discover what she and her lovers forgot to notice. In 1917, Carrie’s uncle sets up a massive archive of her life. . .  In 2004, this archive was unearthed in Los Angeles.” That how curators and historians Norman Klein and Margo Bistis hook you into their multi-layered, multi-media tale of seduction and espionage that they will present Thursday at the Goethe Institute. If you loved Norman Klein on this DnA or his perspective on LA history in his History of Forgetting, you will want to see what he and Margo Bistis do with their mix of images, film and e-book.
