In addition to the opening of Diane Von Furstenberg: Journey of a Dress at LACMA this weekend, celebrating the wrap dress, which is now enjoying a revival, here are three design events DnA recommends you check out.
1. Dr. Strangelove 50th Anniversary Screening
Commemorate the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic Cold War film, Dr. Strangelove, at the Annendale Branch Library this weekend. Neither the film’s stunning production design by Ken Adam nor its “doomsday” depiction of the Cold War hysteria feels dated. This is the first in a series of talks and screenings around the topic of the Cold War the library is planning for this year.

2. STATIC ELECTRICITY: Objects That Light
See found objects transformed into functional art, at the opening of an exhibit of work by artists Joan Robey and Tom Walker that features lighting sculptures made from recycled materials.

3. Trashy Characters: A CraftLab Workshop
And speaking of art made with found objects. . . now that Los Angeles has instituted a ban on plastic bags, and the City of LA is ratcheting up an effort to restore public drinking fountains so as to lessen dependence on plastic bottles, why not bring your kids to CAFAM Sunday to make “interesting characters and puppets” with plastic bottles and other plastic containers?
