1. Arts ReSTORE LA: Westwood
Tonight the Hammer Museum will kick off the first night in a month-long initiative of pop-up art stores that aims to, “re-energize Westwood Village with the creative force of local Angeleno artisans and craftspeople.”
From November 1 to 24, several empty storefronts in Westwood, donated by the property owners to this project, will be filled with works by artists including Fallen Fruit, ERMIE, Heather Levine Ceramics and Tanya Aguiñiga. Various other events and workshops will accompany the pop-up stores.
This event is free to the public.

2. Private Tour of the Borman Residence

A reception and private tour of the Frank Gehry-designed Borman Residence in Malibu.
The Contemporary Craft Council (CCC) of the Craft & Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) presents a private tour of the Borman Estate designed by Frank Gehry. This rarely accessible home was built for insurance executive Burton Borman on a 160-foot lot on Malibu’s Broad Beach.
It was built in 1989, the same year that Frank Gehry won the prestigious Pritzker Prize, but before he became a household name with swirling metal-clad buildings like Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. With six bedrooms and ten bathrooms spread over 11,413 square feet, the Borman Residence is one of Malibu’s largest beach houses.

3. The Groundskeepers from Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre
Heidi Duckler and her dance troupe have animated Modern houses, Laundromats, gas stations and the penthouse of a downtown skyscraper. Now she is taking her act to the Linda Vista Hospital in Boyle Heights for two weekends of The Groundskeepers, “a traveling multimedia performance that will animate the environs of the hospital buildings including the outdoor fire escape staircase, entry-way, chapel, boiler room, and outdoor parking lot wall.”
She says this is the last opportunity for the public to see this 1924 Mission Revival-style space before it is rebuilt as affordable housing, and audience members will follow dancers into areas of the site not typically open to the public.
Choreographed and directed by Heidi Duckler and written by George Moreno, The Groundskeepers will feature eight company dancers’ athletic movement alongside original music by composer Lu Kunene. Media artist and designer Refik Anadol, CalArts-based lighting designer Grant Dunn, and graphic designer Andrew Byrom will paint the hospital with stunning projections and typographic artworks, illuminating this iconic location before it moves on to its next transformation.
