High street retailers are battling competition from online retailing, a battle that may be intensified by Amazon’s drones ( if you believe that’s possible ). So stores are finding ways to enhance the act of shopping, often creating events around products to lure people away from the computer, such as the Moxie/spa giveaway below. At the same time, indie designers are looking to pop-up markets to get their wares into the hands of buyers; this weekend features sales of limited edition, homespun crafts in Peter Shire ‘s studio as well as the Remodelista and Unique LA marts.
1. Remodelista and Unique LA Holiday Show
Get your fill of modern, American-made gifts this weekend. Remodelista, in Big Daddy’s Antiques on South La Cienega, features almost 40 LA designers, including DnA designers Brendan Ravenhill, Scout Regalia and Tracy Wilkinson, and the yum-yum chocolatier Valerie Confections, whose co-creators include design firm Commune. At Unique LA in California Mart, 350 designers will show off their wares, so you can support them while getting unique gifts for friends and family.

3. Peter Shire Studio Sale
A ceramics sale featuring the work of veteran “Pomo” artist Peter Shire — whose work has found a new generation of fans — takes place December 7th and 8th. It will also raise funds for Cottage Enrichment School in Echo Park, where students will be serving German fare, and people can also donate to the Echo Park Animal Alliance.
