Shoei Shigematsu to lecture as part of UCLA’s Architecture and Urban Design School’s Lecture Series

Monday, November 4,  2013  Lecture: 6:30 pm

Reception 5:45pm pm
Perloff Hall, Decafe, UCLA Campus

Shohei Shigematsu
Partner and Director of OMA New York

OMA, aka Office of Metropolitan Architecture, and helmed by architect Rem Koolhaas, recently beat out OMA alumnus Bjarke Ingels to win the commission to design a mixed-use development in the heart of downtown Santa Monica. OMA’s project, shown above, was subsequently sent back to the drawing board by the Santa Monica City Council, on grounds that it did not include enough affordable housing.

Tonight the project designer Shoei Shigematsu, a Partner and the Director of OMA New York, will speak about the Santa Monica project and others, at UCLA.  Shigematsu’s other projects with OMA include Milstein Hall at Cornell University, and the construction of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. In addition to the Santa Monica project he is also leading the design of the Marina Abramovic Institute for the Preservation of Performance Art in upstate New York, the Miami Beach Convention Center. Having led the team that won the CCTV Headquarters design competition in Beijing, he served as project architect until the end of design development. Mr. Shigematsu also directed OMA’s winning competition entry for the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Headquarters.

DIEM

Friday, November 8

All Day

What should designers do in the face of rampant copying? What makes photography art in the age of the instantaneous smartphone pic? Is LA’s art gallery scene becoming less democratic? How does Mr. Turk (AKA Jonathan Skow) “balance sexuality and tastefulness in social media?”

These are just some of the pressing questions that will be answered in the course of DIEM, an all-day smorgasbord of panels and parties taking place November 8 in the showrooms of West Hollywood. DIEM, which stands for Design Intersects Everything Made.

DIEM: Design Intersects Everything Made is a one-day design symposium presented by the West Hollywood Design District “to inspire and encourage integral design” on Friday, November 8. Its panel discussions and parties will be hosted in showrooms including Minotti, Rose Tarlow, Woven Accents, Niche, Poliform, Christopher Guy and Leica.
