If he’d lived just over a year longer the late, great LA photographer Julius Shulman would have turned one hundred this Sunday. In honor of that milestone Woodbury University, home of the Julius Shulman Institute, will celebrate his legacy with two events that look at the contemporary relationship between photography and the built environment.

On Saturday afternoon, October 9 there will be a symposium and exhibition that I’ll emcee and that includes panels moderated by architects Neil Denari and Kazys Varnelis in conversation with architects and photographers — Iwan Baan, Sze Tsung Leong, Livia Corona, Frank Escher, Sharon Johnston, Linda Taalman — and curator and critic Sylvia Lavin.
The exhibition shows work by Baan, Leong and Corona as well as other penetrating photographers of the built environment: James Welling, Catherine Opie, Chris Mottalini, David Leventi, Luisa Lambri, Victoria Sambunaris, Jason Schmidt and. . . Julius Shulman.
On Sunday night, October 10, there will be a celebration evening held at Union Station in downtown. Actress Diane Keaton will receive the 10th annual Julius Shulman Communication Award and photographer Iwan Baan will be presented the 1st annual Julius Shulman Photography Award during the fundraising dinner.
